Danish cinema ought not be reduced only to the work of the emblematic director, Lars von Trier. From the beginnings of cinema to the present day, France is perennially at the center of world film culture. Traditionally, though, the history of French cinema has been told in terms of great directors and select artistic movements. This new edited volume presents an alternative to this standard story  by unearthing lost or neglected films, broadening the canon, and offering original approaches to acknowledged classics.

For this project, the editors seek 1000-word submissions on notable French films. All selections are welcome, but the editors are particularly interested in texts that relate to the following categories: animation; women’s cinema; avant-gardes ...

India Will Spend $140 Million To Restore Classic Movies

The Times of India reports the Indian government said it will spend as much as $140 million restoring roughly 2,500 films, many rare including some silent Bollywood classic pictures.

The investment is aimed at preserving the country's movie heritage and to rescue important films such as documentary footage of Mahatma Gandhi and India's first prime minister Jawarharlal Nehru.

A total of 2,500 films have been earmarked for restoration, including 1,450 from the silent era.

Japanese Government Offers Financial Incentives To Visiting Productions...

Screen Daily reports the Japanese Tourism Agency (JTA) has officially announced a new plan of offering support to selected Film and TV productions from around the world who might be interested in shooting in Japan in a effort to boost visitors to the country. As part of the JTA's "Visit Japan" and "Screen Tourism Promotion Project", the offered support includes financial aid in production as well as assistance with location scouting and other incentives.  Currently the direct financial aid includes a maximum of $58,000 against filming costs.

Pusan International Film Festival Announces Online Screenings.

The Pusan International Film Festival in conjunction with the Asian Film Market will launch an online movie screening service on September 6th via their main website. Featured on the website will be various films from the Pusan Promotion Plan Project and other films from previous festivals still looking for distribution. In addition, starting in line with the start of the 2010 Pusan International Film Festival on Oct 10th, festival entries and other new Asian films will also be available to watch.

Hoyt Cinemas signs Digital Cinema pac with Christie Projectors

Hoyts Cinemas, one of the largest theater systems in Australia signed a deal to change over 400 screens in 49 locations to 2K and 4K-ready Series 2 Christie Solaria projectors by 2013, FilmJournal.com reports.

This agreement is part of the Digital Cinema Implementation Partners-Australia (DCIP-A) and makes Hoyt Cinemas one of the first exhibitors worldwide to install Christie 4K DLP Cinema® projection technology.

Sreen Daily reports that Sony has broken new ground by holding the first ever 3-D press conference for the upcoming 3-D film Resident Evil: Afterlife. The conference features the films star, Milla Jovovich beamed in from Los Angeles in 3-D as she discusses the soon to be released fourth installment of the Resident Evil franchise.
